99年作。~
97年だったかな、そのくらいにリリースされたファーストに漂うどうにも中途半端なヒップホップ色に辟易して、セカンドはまあいいやと思ってましたが、中古で安く売ってたのを聴いてビックリ。~
まずは当代随一のソングライターでもあり、シンガーでもあるJOEが手がけ、デュエットも買って出たミディアム・ナンバー「Faded Picture」がナイス。~
こういう曲書かせるとホントにJOEはいいな〜。~
あとはスロウ「Happily Ever After」、もう一方のミディアム「If」みたいなメロウなミディアム〜スロウを細い声質で歌いこんで行く姿は、なんとなく元ニュー・エディションのラルフ・トゥレスヴァントを思い出してしまいました。~
去年リリースされたデイヴ・ホリスターのセカンドもオーソドックスなR&Bに貫かれた好作だったことを考えると、男性シンガーは下手にヒップホップ・ソウルに手を出さないほうがいいんじゃないかな〜とも思えてきます。~
結局ヒップホップ・ソウルは女性シンガーのものでしかないのかなという感じがしますけれども。~
そういえばメアリ・Ｊの子供の父ちゃんなんだよな〜。~

セカンド・アルバム「Personal Conversation」で大ブレイクしたCaseのサード・アルバム。~
今回も粒よりの楽曲を揃えての発表。~
まずはJOEがソングライティングに関わった(1)が秀逸。~
JOEのサード・アルバム「My Name is JOE」の日本盤でこの曲がボーナス・トラックで入ってるって聞いたけど、聴いたことないんで、わかりませんが、JOEのヴァージョンも聴いてみたいな〜。~
この曲のプロデューサーはジェシー・パウエルや112で売り出し中のティム＆ボブ。~
21世紀のジャム＆ルイスになり得るか？~
Case〜JOEのコンビは今後もいい曲を出してくれるでしょう。~
個人的には、どう聴いてもスティーヴィー・ワンダーが歌ってるようにしかきこえない(2)、ソウルにはお約束の雨音SEを使用した(5)なんかが気に入りました。~
あとは淫靡な(6)。~
そして、プロデューサーにジャム＆ルイスを起用、GAPバンドのチャーリー・ウィルソンをゲストに迎えた(12)がまたサイコー！~
ジャネット・ジャクソンに代表されるような一連の売れセン作品のみならず、こういった地味な作品でこそ実力のほどがわかるというものです。~
ジャム＆ルイスはやっぱすげえや。~
21世紀もいただきって感じなんだろな〜。

ケイスの4枚目、01年の佳作「Open Letter」以来実に8年ぶりのアルバム。~
「Open Letter」も結構出来が良かったんで突然シーンから姿を消したのは理解不能でした。~
インディから復帰ということで、シンセの音色に若干ショボさを感じさせる瞬間もあるものの、録音技術の発達のおかげかさほどアラは見えません。~

ミディアム(1)から快調、メロウに迫る(2)、ティム＆ボブ制作の(3)も良いですが、個人的にはメロメロな(5)で昇天。~
メロディアスな糖分の多い曲が今のR&Bには足りないな〜と痛切に思ってしまいました。~
アッパーな(6)、マリオ・ワイナンスのちょっと今っぽい(7)、どこかアーロン・ホールっぽい歌唱を見せる(9)、そしてそのガイのセカンド・アルバム「The Future」からのカヴァー(10)はケイスのルーツがわかる仕組みになっており、90年代の匂いをプンプンさせながらの歌唱が心地ようございます。~
(12)(13)も出来良し、ほのぼの系の(14)でアルバムは幕を閉じます。~

とにかくスロウの出来が良く、この手の歌手の居場所がない状況ってのはどうなってるのかなあと思います。~
ちうかエロいことするときにこういうのは最近かけないのかね。~
昔はベッドの横にバリー・ホワイトが必ず一枚あったみたいなそういう風習は廃れたのか？~
起死回生の一枚となるか。~
