シャーデー実に8年ぶりの新作。
自分は既に英国の音楽から離れて十年以上になるので、ここでは、米国の黒人音楽と比較してのレビューになりますが、ご了承ください。

デビュー時には、クワイエット・ストームなるブームが巻き起こりつつあり、シャーデーも基本的にはUKソウルのクワイエット・ストーム系という中にカテゴライズされていました。
（当時そんなことはわからなかったけど）
しかし、シャーデーのヴォーカルはUKソウルを代表するキャロン・ウィーラーやヤング・ディサイプルズ、米国のアニタ・ベイカーやミキ・ハワードなどのゴスペル臭さとは全くかけ離れた倦怠感溢れるもので、只一人我が道を行くと行った風情を醸し出していました。
後についてくる人達もいなかったし。
とはいうものの、彼女の歌はアメリカに住む黒人達の心を掴み、クインシー・ジョーンズが顧問を務める「Vibe」誌でのベスト・ラヴソング投票の企画では彼女達の「Sweetest Taboo」がマーヴィン・ゲイの「Let's Get It On」に次ぐ2位の座を獲得しました。
アフリカン・アメリカンから支持されるイギリス生まれの黒人シンガーという特異な地位を確立するに至ります。

前作となる「Love Deluxe」が発売されたのが92年。
当時は、パフィ・コムズ率いるバッド・ボーイズ軍団がメアリ・Jを先頭に立てて全世界的にヒップホップ・ソウルを確立させ、また、メインストリームでは、ボーイズIIメンが「End of The Road」をメガヒットさせて米国黒人音楽がワールド・スタンダードになりつつある事を示しました。
そして、イギリスでのアシッド・ジャズやハウスの隆盛など（よくわからないのでテキトー）、シャーデーのいる場所が少なくなってきたことが大きな要因として彼女の沈黙を長引かせたのではないかと思います。

96年ごろから生音重視のニュー・クラシックスの台頭、また、ローリン・ヒルの「The Miseducation Of」のヒットによる部分がシャーデーの復帰を促したのではなかろうかという気もします。
とはいうものの、シャーデーのスタイルは見事なまでに守られ、簡素なバッキングに乗せた気怠くゆったりとしたヴォーカルで綴られていく11曲は至福の体験。

このまま不変のスタイルを持ち続け、歌っていくのでしょう。
少しスタイルは違いますが、ジョニ・ミッチェルやカーリー・サイモンとかと同列にして語るのがいいのかも。

実に10年ぶりとなるシャーデーの新譜。
全くもって、相変わらず、という言葉がピッタリ。
(1)からどっぷりとシャーデーの世界に浸れます。
個人的にはピアノ・プレイが印象的な(3)がスキ。
(4)はイントロの安いドラム音源っぽいのが減点かなあ。
中盤からどんどん良くなっていくだけに残念。

とはいうものの、先に書いたようにそのかわらなさが持ち味であり、今となっては唯一無二の魅力となっておりますが、現在のヒップホップ全盛の中では居場所がないせいなのか、その寡作っぷりが残念です。
89年の映画「Do The Right Thing」ではサミュエル・L・ジャクソン扮するラジオDJがブギ・ダウン・プロダクションからはじまる黒人シンガー達に感謝の意を捧げるシーンにイギリスからシャーデーが唯一挙げられたシーンは、当時のアメリカ黒人からの支持されていたかがわかります。

公式サイトの動画では、お変わりないようでなによりですが、動画ではどえらい古いオレンジ色のiBookを使ってる映像が出てビックリ。
10年以上前のモデルじゃなかったっけ。
